New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately after his electoral win in November.

"My choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of focusing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability voters supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Political Debate

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
