The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
