Meteorologists are reporting an icy start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," said the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are due to be cold, meaning extra layers vital, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to allow extra time for travel on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on public transport.

Readings Expected to Plummet Even More

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this indicated the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
