Following a festive period filled with rich foods and downtime, numerous individuals enter January looking to get their fitness back on track.

But, could Artificial Intelligence be changing the world of exercise by providing an option to personal trainers?

Personalized Programs and Flexible Schedules

One fitness enthusiast employed an AI tool for last-minute preparation for the Cardiff Half Marathon.

This young woman hailing from a town in Wales explained she appreciated the liberty to pose queries any time of day – something she felt was not possible with a personal trainer.

Leah used an AI-driven fitness application that gave her customized schedules with audio coaching and pace setting for her inaugural half marathon in 2024.

She said she requested it to create a plan combining cardio and the gym, and it produced an 11-week programme tailored to her event day and objectives.

The user then adjusted the schedule to fit her daily routine, which she described was convenient.

The following year, she opted for a different tool because it was cheaper and she could ask it questions whenever she wanted. She finished a full minute quicker than her target finish.

She noted she did not want feeling pressure from a human personal trainer.

"Using AI you have to find your own drive, which I actually prefer," she added.

Remarkable Fitness Improvements

Meanwhile, Another individual, 23, based in Swansea, has been using AI for his fitness and diet plans, and reported he has achieved peak strength, increasing his bench press from 70kg to a much heavier load.

Richard turned to a AI assistant for assistance after being unable to run a race.

"I just knew I need to sort myself out," he said.

The free tool constructed a fitness and meal program personalized to his goals, and established structured routines.

"I work out for about two hours a day and I've seen a noticeable change," he added.

The Expense Contrast: Technology vs. Conventional Training

A recent survey in the previous year analyzed costs for 17 of the largest fitness chains and found the average membership cost was around £38 a month, for standard full-access plans.

Fees started at £23 at the cheapest chain to a premium rate at the highest-priced.

Based on further data, personal trainers set their own rates, usually £30-£65 per 45-60 minute appointment in most areas and about £45-£65 in London.

Customers typically use a coach once or twice a week and work with them for a short period, however these agreements are often adaptable.

The Essential Human Element

Personal trainer one experienced professional, from Cardiff, acknowledged AI can be beneficial to speed up progress, but believes it will never replace the human connection and responsibility that in-person coaching offers.

The 37-year-old, who has 12 years experience as a coach, focuses on older adults and injury rehabilitation. He said a number of his trainees also employ technology.

"I think it's very valuable, additional information is positive," he stated.
"I believe the more that people are online the more they'll desire human connection because they want the warmth from the comprehension that is missing from a computer," he continued.

The trainer said Artificial intelligence can educate clients and make guidance more effective.

But, he said real commitment comes when people show up in person for their sessions.

"No matter how helpful as it is at the middle of the night, a digital tool won't keep you accountable at 7am before work," he concluded.

For many, he said, the gym is a space to disconnect from devices and take a break from technology.
