U.S. actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the award-contending production Slave Play, was detained in November at an international terminal in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle controlled substances into the country, officials announced.

Harris, 36, was stopped on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer discovered 0.78 grams of a crystal material containing the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, as stated by a customs spokesperson.

Regional customs officials lodged a formal complaint with the prosecutor’s office to initiate formal charging proceedings against the individual.
