Condemnation Surges as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Rebuke

Individuals from both sides of the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to social media to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest

Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant sum.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was swift and harsh.

This is a vile and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a disturbed man."

Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Rebuke from Within Party

Some Republican lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his party to defend the comments.

Reiner's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.

"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence without reservation after the killing of another individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
